Mercedes CLS 250 CDI

Mercedes CLS 250 CDI Candor and Opulence. It is in the air. The top models in range abandoned their nobles V6 and V8 in favor of 4-cylinder diesel. Less complacent, but high-performance engines in their field. After Jaguar and its XF, the Mercedes CLS welcomes for the first time in its history a 4-cylinder. We call it democracy.

Myths fall one by one. At the time where Porsche with a diesel, high range models abandoned their nobles V6 and V8 in favor of 4-cylinder diesel. So far only master on board, the pioneer of the cut 4 doors is obliged to organize new and ambitious competition. The Audi A7 at the top and the future BMW Series 6 Gran Coupe and to a lesser extent the Volkswagen.

To do this, the German mark has relied on its program Blue Efficiency and small 4-cylinder 250 CDI. Engine born end of 2008, under the hood of the C class, which quickly emerged as successor of the good old 200 and 220 CDI. Declinable in three levels of power (136 HP, 170 ch and ch 204), it includes a common-rail technology, new piezo-electric injectors and a double boost (136 HP version has a simple Turbo).

Implemented here without its 204 ch definition, this engine animates boldly the 1 785 kg of big German Coupe. If it is not the nobility of a V6 in its sound and its smoothness of operation, this 4-cylinder can however build on a spontaneous response and especially a regularity in its mounted in the regime. This small nervous, slightly hitter bonus under the 2 000 rpm, unpacks its 500 Nm of torque in a linear fashion. It can also boast to very low. Keep as always a reserve under the right foot without never needing to activate the box 7 G Tronic palettes. The only black point is its sound. Just worthy of a Taxi. On a Coupe to €60,000 it’s disorder.

Consumption values (6.0 l/100 km, identified by our care) and emissions (134 g CO2/100 km) relatively low, not are not obtained at the expense performance since this CLS reaches the 100 km/h in 7.5 s and a v-max of 242 km/h. worthy of the V6 performance.

On the road, the CLS does not display the vivacity of a Coupe. There is merit to effectively combine comfort and dynamism. Depreciation, remarkable of base, touch the perfection when it is next to the Airmatic suspension (option to €2,200). Add to this a worthy of the largest Majors soundproofing and you get a great road. Curious? But true.

This large baby of 4.94 m denies not so its genes of Coupe. The driving position is along ground and access on board still requires the kowtowing. Conversely, the grand trunk (520 liters) and its two rear seats remind us that the CLS has the blood of sedan in the veins. You will not have scruples to walk the small family on a Coupe.

With 12 aid to the conduct and 9 airbags, Mercedes can claim the best level of active security currently on the market. Note that the Coupe launches a new generation of lighting with Adaptive lighting system (Intelligent Light Assist) LED technology. At €1,800, the view cannot be that clear.
