The upcoming 2024 Formula 1 season is poised to commence in an extraordinary fashion. In a bold move that deviates from the time-honoured tradition of Sunday races, the Bahrain Grand Prix, which marks the inaugural race of the season, has been scheduled for a Saturday. This scheduling decision has created waves in the F1 circuit, igniting a sense of curiosity and eagerness among both fans and competitors.

As we countdown to the season’s kick-off, fans and broadcasters await to see how this shift from the traditional Sunday racing slot will unfold and what it could mean for the future of F1 racing. This unique approach to the race schedule underscores the dynamic and evolving nature of the sport, keeping fans on their toes and adding an extra layer of excitement to the start of the 2024 F1 season.

The Rationale Behind the Change

The decision to schedule the opening two races set to take place on Saturdays instead of the traditional Sunday was made for two reasons. The first major reason is due to the F1 regulations which mandate a minimum of a week’s gap between two races. This rule ensures adequate time for teams to manage logistics, equipment transfer, and setup at the new location.

The second is attributed to the commencement of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which is part of the same F1 weekend as the start of Ramadan, was originally slated for Sunday, 10th March. However, to respect the religious observance and avoid any potential conflicts, the race was rescheduled to the preceding Saturday night.

The decision to hold the opening races of the season on a Saturday was not arbitrary but a thoughtful adjustment made in consideration of religious observances and regulatory requirements. This unique arrangement underscores the flexibility and adaptability of the F1 management to ensure a smooth and respectful racing season. The first practice sessions are now on Thursday, the qualifying rounds on Friday, and the Grand Prix begins at 3pm GMT on Saturday.

The Unconventional Super Saturday. Not the First Time

The decision to hold the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix on a Saturday, aptly dubbed ‘Super Saturday’, marks a significant departure from the norm.  However, it is not the first time that a season has started on a Saturday. The inaugural world championship race, which took place at Silverstone in 1950, was also held on a Saturday, a tradition that continued until 1977, then again in 1979 and 1981.

More recently, in November last year saw the Las Vegas Grand Prix begin on a Saturday night  for the very first time. Partly due to commercial reasons aimed to maximise viewership and attendance and the time difference between the US and Europe. By scheduling the race on a Saturday night in Las Vegas, it allowed for the race to be broadcasted early Sunday morning in Europe. This timing was carefully chosen to cater to the majority of the sport’s viewership, which is based in Europe.

The Impact on Teams and Drivers

The decision to shift the Grand Prix to a Saturday race introduces a unique set of challenges and opportunities for both the teams and the drivers. This change in schedule means that there is one less day available for recovery and making necessary adjustments to the cars between the qualifying sessions and the actual race. As a result, teams will be required to modify their strategies and workflows to accommodate this new timeline.

For the drivers, this change means they will need to alter their routines and preparation strategies. They will now have to aim to reach their peak performance a day earlier than what has been the norm. This adjustment could potentially affect their performance and overall strategy for the race.

These new circumstances are seen as a chance to test the adaptability and resilience of the teams and drivers. It adds an additional layer of complexity and intrigue to the competition, making the event even more exciting for the fans. This shift in schedule could potentially redefine racing strategies and norms, marking a new era in the history of Grand Prix racing.

Looking Ahead to the 2024 Season

As we look forward to the start of the 2024 F1 season, the Super Saturday in Bahrain promises to be a thrilling spectacle. The unique scheduling decision has already generated a buzz in the F1 news, and it will be fascinating to see how this change impacts the dynamics of the race weekend.

Will Super Saturday in Bahrain set a new precedent for future F1 races? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain – the 2024 F1 season promises to be a year of exciting and at times dramatic racing action for F1 fans around the world.
